Our King Reigns!
“You are a lion’s cub, O Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.” -Genesis 49:9-10
Not long ago, at a family movie night at our church in the Falls, we watched one of the movies, Prince Caspian, from the C.S. Lewis series about the land of Narnia. These stories are fantasy with a Christian twist. One of the main characters is Aslan, a mighty lion, who represents Christ. He is portrayed as powerful yet gentle, demanding but merciful. He is always nearby, but not always seen. And the good people who inhabit the land of Narnia love him dearly and respect him absolutely. He is their spiritual King.
The scripture above comes from the scene where the patriarch, Jacob, is on his deathbed, and is offering a blessing to each of his sons. He declares that all of his other sons will bow down to Judah and praise him. From the line of Judah came the greatest king ever to rule the holy land, King David. And from the line of David came an even greater King… Jesus Christ.
When I was driving home that night, I was still thinking about the movie. Suddenly I was overwhelmed by a deep longing for the King. Oh, to see Jesus! He is the one to whom belongs the ruler’s staff and the obedience of the nations. He appears throughout scripture from Genesis to Revelation. In the final book of the Bible, John writes, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David has triumphed!”
Our King reigns! And some day we will see him face-to-face.
