Decisions

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord. - Isaiah 11:2

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Does it sometimes feel to you like you are constantly making decisions? You probably are! From the time we wake up in the morning, until we go to bed at night, our lives are filled with decisions. Daily, we have to decide what to wear, what to eat, and what to do.

Some decisions are fairly simple. We get up, take a shower, and brush our teeth. Pretty much routine, right? We eat what we have available in the house that we like, and we put on whatever clothes are clean that are suitable for our tasks that day. Not too hard.

But after that the decisions may start to get a little more difficult. What will we do today? Where will we go? Who will we be with? We may be under obligation to go to work or school, but we can still change our direction. We may need to make a Dr.’s appointment, or pay the bills, or visit a grieving friend. We know we can’t do it all in one day, so we have to pick and choose.

Finally, we come to the difficult decisions: How do we discipline our child for something they’ve done wrong? Should we have the surgery the Dr. recommended? Can we stay in a relationship that seems to be going bad? Should we answer that call to ministry? And who can help us decide? We may turn to friends, or specialists, or even the stars, looking for easy answers…but they don’t come.

Isaiah speaks of the Spirit of wisdom resting on “him”. Who is he speaking of? This is a prophecy of the One we call Jesus, who said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” When we seek answers from God in the name and Spirit of Jesus, through prayer and reading scripture, we will find them. He will give us a discerning heart.
