And God Said Let There Be Light!

“And God said let there be light!” Genesis 1

As the days grow longer, our hearts grow warmer. Light has an amazing effect on us. It changes us physiologically and emotionally. That’s why we put windows in our homes and sit outside when we can. A walk in the sunshine can change our entire attitude and our entire day.

Jesus speaks often about light. He tells us a great light shines on the people living in darkness. That the darkness cannot overcome the light. He continues saying that evil people don’t like the light, and we are supposed to be a light to the world. Jesus even calls himself the light.

Light shows us what is true. When we walk through dark, shadowy places, we can often be mistaken about what we see and what is real. Evil people like the darkness where they can manipulate and confuse others. Light brings honesty and clarity. Secrets are tools of darkness and discord, when we keep people “in the dark.” Light shows us what is in a person’s heart. Most misunderstandings happen when we don’t understand a person’s heart, their motives or their frustrations. We talk at each other, instead of with each other. When we “shed some light” on a subject we come to understand why people say or do something. We even understand when we have done something wrong and need to confess and repent. Light opens our hearts to each other and to God.

As we step into the sunshine of spring and summer, we also need to step into the sonshine of God that can lift our hearts, heal our hurts, and take away some of the anger that confusion and darkness causes.

The Bible says that in the New Creation God will be our light. We will see everything clearly. Every day will be like a walk in the park on a summer’s day. We will see each other’s hearts and let love overcome confusion and frustration. For now, we can do our best to live in the light and let the light live in us. It’s a lot better than a dark, cold, walk in a shadowy world.
