PCUMC Art Class Is Bringing May Flowers
Watercolors are one of many fellowship groups at PCUMC. All of our fellowship groups fulfill our mission of staying connected and loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, thereby growing through relationships with others.
Art Instructor Virginia Kelly says, “We all feel grateful for PCUMC for providing a secure and comfortable place to gather. This church is truly a sanctuary and welcomes us with open arms each time we come.”
I posed this question: how have you been spiritually uplifted by the watercolor classes? Their answers were not just inspiring, but also affirm the need for art to make our lives complete. Some comments received were:
“When we create art, in this case, watercolor painting, we become co-creators with God, becoming helpers in the formation of paradise here on earth. These classes have given me faith once again, in what it means to have hope.”
“I have been reminded what a wonderful, beautiful world God has made for us. I’m reminded to be thankful for just waking up every day.”
“It’s a chance to clear my mind and forget the troubles of the past week. It puts me in a tranquil state.”
“Coming to classes has helped me stay tuned in to God. He gives me inspiration.”
“I am so glad Ginny’s lessons have continued here since I first met her at community education at North Tonawanda High School in 1998. The two hours here are my chance to use my God-given appreciation and love of drawing and painting.”
“Every day as I work as an artist, I can’t help but notice all the things in nature that God gives us - for free - as a gift.”
“The classes help remind me of the beautiful world we live in; nature, trees, birds, mountains. I forget my problems while painting. I am so glad to have the classes. I appreciate Ginny’s love of animals; we share that love.”
“Saturday morning watercolor class is a chance to set aside all of the frustrations and negativity of the week. It renews my soul and brings me peace. It gives me an opportunity to paint without making excuses for a hundred other things that I feel I should be doing.”
“The watercolor classes have helped me appreciate the wonderful world we have around us and what we can do to keep it that way.”
“Coming to watercolor classes gives me an opportunity to tune into my inner self and use and appreciate my God-given talents.”
“The prayer we say as a group is very inspirational. I am continually trying to improve as an artist now that my children are on their own.”
The group begins each session with the Painter’s Prayer:
Persistence to stay with the job at hand, patience to give ourselves time to grow. Acceptance of where we are as artists today. Inspiration in all we see around us, nurturing our God-given talents. Thankfulness that we are here.
Art classes are held at PCUMC on Saturdays at 9:00 AM and Tuesdays at 1:00 PM and are open to the community for $7 to support ministries of the church.
